25th Annual United Way Day of Caring expands and adapts to COVID-19 - Sentinel & Enterprise

FITCHBURG — Every year, United Way of North Central Massachusetts brings volunteers together to help area nonprofits for the Day of Caring.

The 25th Annual Day of Caring, being held over two days on Friday, Sept. 18, and Friday, Oct. 16, will retain the event’s spirit of unity and community service while running a little differently due to increased needs and precautions in response to COVID-19.

The Day of Caring is the largest UWNCM volunteer event of the year and enables nonprofits to get assistance with tasks they may not otherwise have the resources to complete. As many nonprofits are busier than usual this year providing services for people impacted by COVID-19, UWNCM decided to expand the event from one to two days.

In addition, participants will be expected to follow health and safety requirements based on Massachusetts mandates and CDC guidelines. Nonprofits will provide hand sanitizing stations and volunteers must wear masks, generously donated by AIS, Inc. of Leominster, when unable to social distance. Both days will also feature virtual kick-offs with raffle prizes in place of the standard Kick-Off Breakfast and Thank-You Barbecue.

Despite the event’s revised schedule and activities, volunteer projects will be similar to those from previous years, as teams will work on tasks such as cleaning up trails, landscaping, painting faded walls, organizing material and sewing library book bags.

“The volunteers’ health and safety is our first priority,” said Fran Longton, UWNCM Volunteer Center Manager. “While this year’s event will look a little different, we’re looking forward to seeing the same great enthusiasm and getting the same amazing results for non-profits that have defined the day since it was founded in 1995.”

Local non-profits, businesses and volunteers are invited to get involved with the event:
