COVID-19 Will Push Patients to Demand More Timely Care Access - PatientEngagementHIT.com

By Emily Sokol, MPH

- Patient experience will change as a result of the coronavirus pandemic as patients demand more timely care access, revealed industry leaders in Insights by Xtelligent Healthcare Media’s latest report.

The Future of Healthcare: Moving Beyond 2020 surveyed 363 healthcare stakeholders on their response to the coronavirus, building on previous work from Insights at the start of the pandemic.

Results from the latest report uncovered how organizations plan to move forward after COVID-19 and prepare for the reshaped and new normal.

One of the biggest changes to care delivery is patient experience, respondents highlighted. A majority of respondents (79 percent) believed the pandemic would push patients to further embrace telehealth as a part of their care experience.

Given the rise in telehealth appointments, it is unsurprising that patients will want to further embrace this technology moving forward.

“If a patient has done telehealth and their insurance company chooses not to cover that, the insurance companies are going to get pushback,” said a regional academic health system representative during qualitative follow-up.

Patients will also demand more timely care, 45 percent of stakeholders reported. Throughout the pandemic, patients became accustomed to seeing their doctor through a video or phone call. So as they readjust to the new normal, many patients will expect to receive the same quick and timely care.

Yet there was disagreement amongst industry leaders on what types of care patients will focus on. Twenty-nine percent of respondents believed patients would focus more on preventive care while 28 percent said patients are more likely to focus on emergent needs.

This disagreement parallels the mixed review on whether patients would feel empowered or disempowered to seek care moving forward: 28 percent of survey respondents believe the former while 15 percent believe the later.

Some healthcare leaders think the pandemic will empower patients to demand more timely, preventive services.

But others believe COVID-19 will disempower patients to only seek care for emergent cases. Delayed care could be detrimental to the healthcare system as early diagnoses could be missed. Diseases may not be treated when care is less invasive and less costly.

Industry leaders need to ensure that the current situation does not negatively impact long-term health outcomes for patients.

A key piece of this response will be an emphasis on social determinants of health. While these factors such as housing stability, access to care, and food insecurity have gained increased focus in recent years, its momentum cannot stop. Over half (57 percent) of respondents felt that the pandemic would push the industry to focus even more on social determinants of health moving forward.

The pandemic highlighted many inequities of care, so placing a greater emphasis on social determinants of health moving forward can help close these gaps in care and access to care.

Many (54 percent) also believe that regulatory bodies will shift focus to help improve care access to traditionally underserved communities. This in combination with an improved focus on social determinants of health and more actively engaged patients will help ensure care delivery is altered for the better.

But patients need to understand when and how it is appropriate to seek care. So delivering consistent and culturally appropriate messaging to patients about the services available to them and how to access care will be crucial.

The Future of Healthcare: Moving Beyond 2020 highlights the industry’s coronavirus response and emphasizes strategies for moving forward in three key areas: telehealth, value-based care, and patient experience. The full report can be found here.
