Joe Boever is remembered as a caring man who loved spending time with the elderly and rescuing neglected plants.
Boever, 55, died after being struck by a vehicle driven by South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnbsborg along a Hyde County highway Saturday evening. His death is at the center of a days-long investigation to determine if there was any wrongdoing on the part of Ravnsborg, who says he believed he had hit a deer and didn't realize he'd struck Boever until the following morning.

Boever's body underwent an autopsy earlier this week in Minnesota as a part of the investigation.
The family has elected to hold a remembrance ceremony at a later time, according to Boever's obituary.
Boever, born in Brookings in 1964, was one of seven children born to John and Dorothy Boever. But even with a house full of kids, he stood out.
"Because of his precociousness, he was never lost in the crowd," his obituary reads.
As a five-year-old, Boever taught himself to read, something his family discovered when they found him reading encyclopedias. And after graduating from Brookings High School in 1982, Boever earned a nursing degree from the University of South Dakota.
Boever married in 2017 and most recently had worked as a farm hand on his cousin's Hyde County farm.
He most enjoyed his time working in nursing homes, according to his obituary.
"His gentle personality allowed him to make a special connection with the elderly," it reads.
The story continues below.
Boever was also a talented gardener and "could grow just about anything."
"He propagated many Jade plants for his family and rescued neglected plants wherever he went," the obituary reads.
Boever leaves behind a wife, mother, six brothers and sisters and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
"He loved his wife and family as we loved him," his obituary reads, "and his passing leaves a hole in all our hearts."
