BUCYRUS – The new owners of The Medicine Shoppe are continuing the business’s longtime philosophy of “Caring Beyond Prescriptions.”

Tamer and Elizabeth Ibrahim have purchased the full-service pharmacy and drug store, located at 345 S. Sandusky Ave. in Bucyrus, but they’re committed to honoring the “mom and pop” tradition of longtime owner Steve Routzahn.

“We’re kind of going the extra mile for our customers,” said Elizabeth Ibrahim, a former geriatric care manager in Canton, Ohio. “That’s definitely our philosophy. We’re giving extra customer service, and that’s how we’re treating our staff as well.”

Ibrahim said Routzahn was looking to retire but wanted to maintain The Medicine Shoppe’s “community pharmacy” atmosphere customers have come to expect. “I think it’s really important to let people know that he was working really hard to keep it local and not sell it to a chain.”

Although the new owners were faced with the COVID-19 pandemic from the onset in March, the lobby has reopened and the business is now fully staffed with two pharmacists and 10 other employees, Ibrahim said. They have also invested in upgrades to the computer system.

One of the most notable changes, however, is the establishment of free prescription delivery for those who do not have the means to travel, she said. “Free delivery is huge. There’s a lot of seniors stuck in their homes, especially now with the COVID-19.”

The Medicine Shoppe also offers free compliance packaging for medications in convenient, disposable “bubble packs,” she said, as well as a mobile app which allows customers to refill prescriptions on-the-go and contact the pharmacy with the touch of a button.

Ibrahim said she and her husband, who worked as a pharmacist for a national drug store chain, felt that owning and running their own pharmacies would be a win-win for themselves and their customers, especially seniors struggling with managing their prescriptions.

“I saw that the elderly were often confused about their many medications and even where to store them, and Tamer just felt like a robot in his job,” Ibrahim said. “We thought we could do more for our patients, that there definitely was a better way.”

Three years ago, the Ibrahims, who have four children, purchased their first pharmacy in Canton. Since then, they have acquired independent drug stores in Lancaster and Baltimore, Ohio, both in Fairfield County, as well as The Medicine Shoppe.

Their goal now, she said, is become more active in the Bucyrus area and support local events and charities. They have already joined the Chamber of Commerce and recently donated a supply of hand sanitizer to the Bucyrus Police Department.

“We’re looking to get more involved in the community and looking for better ways to help our customers.”
