BROOME COUNTY (WBNG) -- More than 500 people from businesses all across Broome county were volunteering at more than 50 local projects today to take part in the United Way's Day of Caring.
The volunteers were helping charities and non-profits wherever they needed it.
The Day of Caring started in 2002, a year after the 9/11 terror attacks, and the day has become a local tradition that hasn't been forgotten by those who step up to help each year.
Kim Robinson, Executive Director of the Johnson City Senior Center, one of the organizations getting volunteer work done, said, "It's a wonderful event to commemorate those terrorist attacks and the heroic efforts of the people that did so much that day, and that's the basis of this whole thing."
But that wasn't the only organization feeling the love. Volunteers were also hard at work at the Boys & Girls Club of Binghamton.
"We had about 300 volunteers today and it really allows us to get a lot of work done that we may not normally get done. Because it takes a lot of people and our maintenance staff is only a couple of people," said Marybeth Smith, the executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Binghamton.
Smith said it is also important that people, especially children, have a place to turn to during the pandemic.
"They just need a place to go where they feel safe, they feel comfortable, it looks good, and with what they did for us today making the Boys & Girls Club look even better than it does. Kids feel, well, you know, this is their home away from home, and look what peole in the community are doing. Look how much United Way and our community cares about our Boys & Girls Club."
Robinson said the Johnson City Senior Center saw consistent activity from the volunteers all day.
The Day of Caring continues Saturday from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. at almost two dozen locations around Broome County.
