PORT ANGELES — The United Way of Clallam County is hosting a Virtual Day of Caring by providing to-go bags for registered volunteers on Friday.

The national Day of Service is on 9/11 in memory of the sacrifices made by first responders during the attack on the Twin Towers in New York City and the Pentagon.

A traditional ceremony on 9/11 — the annual 9/11 Monument Rededication and Remembrance ceremony — is canceled because of COVID-19 precautions that limit crowd size to five people, said Alan Barnard, who organizes the commemoration.

The ceremony in the past has attracted some 100 people or more to the park on the waterfront that was formerly known as Francis Street Park.

The national Day of Service, which also serves as the kick-off for United Way’s annual fundraising campaign, will continue this year, but without the crowds. Community members are invited to participate either solo or with family members from a list of suggestions or create their own virtual volunteer projects.

Each to-go bag will include a garbage bag, rubber gloves, re-usable face mask, Live United T-Shirt, a bottle of water and a snack.

“Day of Caring is the biggest day of collective volunteering across the country,” said Amie Batton, United Way campaign chair.

“We encourage you to pick a project, round up your family members, and help make a difference in our community.”

Volunteers can register, and find more information, at unitedwayclallam.org/2020VirtualDayOfCaring.

To-go bags can be picked up between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday at:

Port Angeles: United Way Office at the Port Angeles School District building, 905 W. Ninth St.

Forks: Forks Chamber of Commerce, 1411 S. Forks Ave.

In Sequim, Restraint Days will raise money for United Way. That Takes the Cake is donating proceeds from sales of pre-ordered cupcakes. Peninsula Taproom is donating a percentage of sales for the week beginning Friday and Mariner Cafe is donating 10 percent of sales during the week beginning Friday.
