Dementia can be devastating to people living with dementia and their families, and is a diagnosis faced by more Americans as the US population ages.

According to the Milken Institute, the total number of people with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia in the United States is expected to nearly double from 7.2 million to about 13 million over the next 20 years.

“As people become more and more unfamiliar with the lives they have always known, caregivers can play an important role in relieving anxiety,” says home care and support provider Interim HealthCare Inc. Jennifer Sheets, President and Chief Executive Officer of the company, said. A positive approach to caring for people with dementia. “With proper knowledge, caregivers can help their loved ones cope with the changes they are experiencing.”

Dementia is caused by physical changes in the brain and there are many types of dementia, but Alzheimer’s disease is the most common.

Interim HealthCare recommends three practical tips for compassionate care.

1. Use Hand Underhand Techniques: Hand underhand is a technique that caregivers can use to reduce anxiety and calm people with dementia. The base of the hand or heel is a very sensitive area. Clench your loved one’s dominant hand and apply a small amount of pressure to that area. This technique works best when you put your hands down. It not only gives them a sense of control, but also calms them down.

2. Recognize evolving taste: People with dementia experience a variety of sensory and cognitive changes that can affect their appetite and food preferences. Indeed, your loved ones’ favorite foods may now have a negative smell or taste to them. Maintaining good nutrition is essential, but do not force or discuss these foods. Instead, offer a variety of balanced foods, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and lean protein, in small quantities initially until you understand your new tastes. Be aware that these settings may change again.

3. Opening up time for art and music: When a person is diagnosed with dementia, their ability to act independently is greatly reduced. However, artwork and music allow freedom of expression, which can have a significant impact on relieving anxiety over time. Remember that it’s about the creative process, not the abilities of your loved ones. So set aside 30-45 minutes each week for art and music and consider joining with them.

Interim HealthCare promises to help caregivers find the strength and stamina they need to provide compassionate support to the methodology of Deepa Snow, an international leader in Positive Approach to Care (PAC) philosophy.
