Maryland child care providers receive new guidelines - 47abc - WMDT

MARYLAND – Maryland home child care owners say, on Thursday, they finally received the guidance they were waiting for from the state.

Previously the state only offered guidance for day care centers, run out of commercial spaces. The Maryland State Department of Education says it’s temporarily relaxing restrictions on home child care programs to help accommodate capacity restrictions. Usually small home child care centers are only allowed to have ten total people in their home, including the residents and children they are serving. However with school not in session, many children of day care owners have no where else to go. So the state now says home child care centers can serve eight children at a time with no more than 15 people in the home while the program is operating.

It’s a guideline that some say will help day care owners with large families of their own. “So a lot of people lost a lot of income due to the family size of their own family they had to go down in the number of size of children in their home,” says Crystal Ritter, the owner of Crystal’s Daycare in Delmar.

As for child care in general, all centers and homes offering child care are now able to open as long as they abide by these new capacity limits and health department protocols.
