ROLLINSFORD -- "I miss him very much."
Danielle Cavallini of Somersworth spoke emotionally Monday, mourning the loss of her son, Joseph, the 6-year-old boy who died after being pulled from the Salmon Falls River in Rollinsford Saturday. Authorities had not previously released his identity.
"He was such a sweet and caring little boy, big brother, and son," Danielle said Monday. "He loved to play LEGOS, Minecraft, and Roblox. He loved his little brother Noah, who is 4."
Joseph lived with his mom and his brother in Somersworth. He had just graduated from kindergarten at Idlehurst Elementary School. His father, John, lives in Rollinsford.
"He was a sweet boy, he loved to help people and make people smile, John Cavallini said in a message sent to a reporter Monday. "He was my and is always going to be forever my best friend. I love him very much and I cannot believe he is gone."
On Saturday, at 2:07 p.m., police received a report of a missing child, last seen in the area of the Bicentennial boat launch at Scoutland Road. When they responded, emergency crews learned the child might be in the Salmon Falls River. They called in Rollinsford Fire Department, York Ambulance, South Berwick Police and Fire, New Hampshire State Police, New Hampshire Fish and Game, New Hampshire Marine Patrol and the Strafford County sheriff’s office.
The child was located in the water at 4:42 p.m., authorities said. He was unresponsive and was taken to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover before being transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Fire Chief Mark Rutherford said Joseph was pronounced dead at 7:22 p.m., at Mass. General.
"He was there with a group of people, who were wading and swimming," Rutherford said. "He was with the group and they said they turned around and he was gone."`
Rutherford said because the boy was recovered in the water, the investigation is being conducted by the New Hampshire Marine Patrol.
"Joseph was such an amazing little boy," his mother said. "He always would try to cheer people up and make them smile. He was his mommy's best friend and he absolutely loved his family, his aunt TT, uncle Josh, cousin Sami, cousin Chy Chy, cousin Ryan, and cousin Deven as well as his Puppa. Joseph loved dogs and cats and flowers. He was a very outgoing little boy who was taken way before his time. He will be greatly missed and loved by all."
John, the boy’s father, added, "He made rooms and faces light up. He was always wanting to learn new things ... he was my mini-me. He would want his family to smile and know he loved every one of us. He loved the outdoors and he loved and video games but would rather be outside being young and wild and rambunctious with a smile."
Danielle said Joseph’s favorite color was blue.
A GoFundMe page created by Danielle’s cousin Morgyn Elizabeth Ware is raising funds for funeral expenses. It can be found at gofundme.com/f/tak5jn-funds-for-joseph.
Investigators ask anyone who witnessed or has information related to the incident leading to the boy’s death to contact Lt. Crystal McLain at (603) 227-2113 or Crystal.McLain@dos.nh.gov.
