This summer, the Kids Care Club of Parkland is collecting grocery donations for families who depend on free or reduced-fee school breakfast and lunch during the academic year.
Recent high school graduates Charlie Khalil and Alexa Teo launched Kids Care in 2016. One of the club’s annual projects is the Food Gap project, which benefits families in need through Hope South Florida and Blessings Food Pantry.
Maggie Goldstein is one of three student ambassadors who stepped up to lead the Kids Care Club next year. Goldstein, an entering freshman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, and her mom Kimberly Goldstein have been coordinating directly with Hope South Florida and Blessings Pantry to distribute the grocery donations.
“We are excited and blessed to have been asked to be a part of such a wonderful club,” said Goldstein, who explained that, during the pandemic and the shut down of school, volunteers got to work earlier this year on the Food Gap project and plan on collecting throughout the summer.
To participate in the Food Gap project, neighbors should assemble a fabric or paper shopping bag with boxes of healthy cereal, breakfast bars, macaroni and cheese, crackers, and pasta, jars of peanut butter and jelly, cans of tuna, black beans, and pasta sauce, and a bag of rice.
Kids Care also encourages donors to include a note of encouragement in an unsealed envelope.
Students participating will receive 2.5 volunteer hours per completed bag.
“Students from any school or anyone that would like to participate can contact us to get involved,” said Goldstein.
