Patriots, Kraft family flying 76 health care workers to Super Bowl 2021 - New England Patriots Blog- ESPN - ESPN

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Ten months ago, the New England Patriots team plane embarked on a mission to China to bring much-needed PPE home for health care workers. On Sunday, the plane is heading to Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Florida, on another significant trip related to COVID-19.

Owners Robert and Jonathan Kraft are bringing 76 vaccinated health care workers to the championship game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs (6:30 p.m. ET, CBS), as part of an all-expenses-paid trip.

The NFL had announced in January that it was inviting about 7,500 vaccinated health care workers to the Super Bowl (most from hospitals and health care systems in the Tampa and central Florida area), with all 32 teams also selecting some vaccinated health care workers from their communities to attend.

The Patriots' decision to bring 76 health care workers on their team plane is in addition to that initiative, and the Krafts say there is a dual purpose for the journey. They want to recognize and thank a representative group of health care workers, while spreading the important message of getting vaccinated.

"Last April, when our plane returned with masks from China, we never could have imagined the devastation this pandemic would cause, nor could we have dreamed of the heroic stories and achievements that have come to be as a result, especially the dedication of health care workers on the front lines and the creation of safe and effective vaccines," Robert Kraft said.

"Ten months later, it's an honor for us to celebrate these health care workers by giving them a well-deserved break for a day and an opportunity to enjoy the Super Bowl, a reality that is only made possible because of the vaccines. We hope that in doing so, others are also encouraged to get vaccinated as they are able. Once again, we want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all of the health care heroes who have risked their well-being to ensure ours. They are truly superheroes to us."

The health care workers are from six New England states and represent a range of hospitals and roles.

The Krafts offered four tickets to each of the governors outside of Massachusetts, who then selected health care workers from their respective states -- accounting for a total of 20 workers representing Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

The remaining tickets were distributed to many not-for-profit hospitals throughout Massachusetts that continue to care for COVID-19 patients. All attending health care workers have been fully vaccinated no later than Jan. 24, or 14 days prior to travel.

Those on the trip, with help from the NFL, will also receive:

  • Transportation from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough to Boston's Logan Airport with police escort

  • A ticket to the NFL TikTok Tailgate concert, headlined by Miley Cyrus, exclusively for vaccinated health care workers

  • Two-night complimentary hotel stay

  • Patriots gift bag

  • A $100 Visa gift card to spend at Raymond James Stadium

  • Ground transportation in Tampa

The trip will depart on the morning of Super Bowl LV, and when the plane touches down in Tampa, Robert Kraft will greet them.
