A health care worker who treats the terminally ill at a UK cancer hospital has been confirmed to have the novel coronavirus, according to a new report.
The clinician works at Mount Vernon Cancer Center in Northwood, within London’s Hillingdon borough, England’s National Health Service confirmed, according to Metro UK.
The center will stay open as it “remains safe,” according to an NHS statement.
“We are very well-prepared for incidents like this and the NHS and Public Health England are taking all necessary steps to manage the situation,” the statement said. “All individuals who were in contact with the clinician have been identified and the appropriate measures taken.”
“The risk to patients and staff at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre is very low and we are working with individual patients to appropriately manage their care,” the agency continued.
The total number of COVID-19 infections in the UK stands at 36, according to Metro. Scotland confirmed its first case on Sunday.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to chair a cabinet office board meeting Monday where he is expected to say the UK faces a “significant challenge” from the sweeping illness, the outlet reported. He and other ministers are expected to finalize possible steps if the situation escalates.
Jonathon Ashworth, the UK’s shadow secretary of state for health, said on “BBC Breakfast” Monday morning that he would support going as far as shutting down cities to prevent the virus from spreading “if the medical advice and the scientific advice is to take measures along those lines.”
“It would be a move by government so drastic that we hadn’t seen it. And I’m not sure how practical it could be in reality,” he added. “However, this virus is serious and appears to spread very easily and we need to contain it and slow down the spread.”
