YMCA to launch emergency child care for first responders - WKOW

MADISON (WKOW) —The YMCA of Dane County will begin providing emergency, 24/7 care for the children of essential medical professionals and first responders.

The YMCA is Dane County’s largest child care provider and is prepared to launch the initiative this week, according to a news release.

Over the past few days, the Y worked diligently with government officials as well as UW Health, SSM Health and UnityPoint Health-Meriter to pinpoint needs.

The YMCA’s state-licensed child care staff will operate the program at all
three branches as needs dictate.

The program will utilize the Y’s standard child care curriculum and provide active spaces. Since the Y’s facilities are closed to the public, it enables usage of multiple facility areas to allow for physical distancing between students and their classmates.

To limit the potential spread of COVID-19, public health regulations limit the
YMCA to a maximum of 50 children and 10 staff at each site.

The child care program will be divided into two age groups: 2 to 5-year-olds and 6 to 13-year-olds, and care will be offered around the clock as needed. The Red Cross is providing cots to enable the children in our care to be as comfortable as possible.

While all YMCA branches have been closed to protect public health, the custodial team has worked tirelessly at cleaning and sanitizing all areas of each facility.

Those wishing to support this initiative to assist medical staff and first
responders can contribute at ymcadane.org/support-y/donate.
