MEDINA — Emily Winters, a nursing development specialist at Highland Hospital and Medina native, is one of the three nurses named Health Care Heroes by the Rochester Business Journal.

The Rochester Business Journal looks throughout Monroe County at health care disciplines that contribute not only to health care in their institutions but also community health.

“I was ecstatic because a lot of people who have gone before me and gotten this recognition, I really look up to,” Winters said. “Some of them are my mentors and I knew I was in good company. I can’t put it into words how great it was. I was just thrilled.”

Winters began her career as a nurse 26 years ago. It all started when she saw her father receive care that wasn’t so kind.

“I thought, at the age of 18, ‘I could do a better job,’” Winters said before laughing. “But caring for people, little did I know how challenging it would be at times.”

Over the years she has worked in several different roles. She’s currently a nursing development specialist, certified in nursing education, ensuring new and existing nurses have the competency to deliver exemplary care.

What she believes sealed her nomination, at least at Highland Hospital, Winters said, is it’s one of the first hospitals in Western New York to have its nurse residency program accredited by American Nurse Credentialing Center with distinction. It prepares nurses in the first year of practice to give them everything they need to make good clinical decisions.

Winters has also done disaster relief for Hurricane Maria and was one of eight URMC affiliate professionals who volunteered to help bring health care to Puerto Rico. She also offers CPR training for the community and helps the Amish in Medina with training them in hands-only CPR.

When it comes to nursing, she said the best thing about it is the call to help others, the service — to fill the need and the intimate relationship nurses have in caring for others.

“That in of itself is a gift,” she said. “It’s exhausting — physically and emotionally — whether it is helping to deliver a baby or someone who is on hospice. There are some emotionally draining but rewarding things about nursing. That truly is the best.”
