LAKEPORT— Teresa Campbell knows what it means to serve. Since she graduated nursing school, some 40 years ago, she has dedicated herself to caring for others, first in the Air Force and most recently at Sutter Lakeside Hospital in Lakeport.
After more than 42 years in nursing and nine years at Sutter Lakeside Hospital, the longest she has ever worked in one location, Teresa Campbell will retire in January 2021.
The daughter of an airman, Campbell entered the service as a registered nurse in 1979 and retired as a full bird colonel (which outranks 98% of military personnel) in 2006. In the years between she earned her Master’s degree in nursing, worked in a dozen hospitals, saw the world, worked in the Pentagon and learned lessons that she is eager to share.
Like most military personnel, Campbell moved around a lot. Stationed in seven states and overseas, she says she found something special about each assignment. “I loved the people I worked with and caring for patients. I leaned to ‘bloom where I was planted’ and I’m happier for it.”
One of Campbell’s passions is preventative care – which includes cancer screenings, physical check-ups, and routine vaccines – and she took that passion all the way to the Pentagon working with the Chief Nurse of the Air Force as Director in the Tricare Management Activity.
“I support and promote preventive health testing such as mammograms, colonoscopies and other early detection and prevention testing,” she said.
Campbell also advocates for playing it safe during the current COVID-19 pandemic, saying: “we have some control over getting sick, we can wear a mask, keep a physical distance – in a wartime scenario, with a different enemy, you don’t have any control.”
“In her time with us Teresa has shown her managerial courage, passion for patient experience, humor, tenacity, and heart,” said Emma Dugas, media relations coordinator at Sutter Health Lakeside.
Nurses are the life blood of any hospital and Teresa Campbell has led our nurses through not only the “war” on COVID but has also paved the path to many “victories” in terms of numerous awards and recognition our hospital has received, both regionally and nationally, added Dugas.
After working for the Air Force Surgeon General’s office Campbell decided to return to direct patient care, this time as a civilian. “I found I was drawn to hospitals in small towns, maybe because a base is like a small town.”
Campbell joined Sutter Lakeside in September of 2011 and among her many jobs she personally interviews every nurse hired by the hospital. “I make sure our nurses provide professional, kind and equal care to all patients who come through these doors.” In fact, Campbell marks her time at Sutter Health as perhaps the best portion of her long career, saying: “I’m proud of what we do for Lake County, our community ranks lowest in the state in many health measures because of long-standing disparities, but at Sutter Lakeside Hospital we are changing that, we have excellent quality scores and patient experience ratings, and we are here for everyone.”
“Sutter cares about the right things: quality always comes first. As a leader, I’m proud to support my staff so our nurses can excel at what they do, but the highlight of my day is still rounding with patients. Helping others is an honor.”
