FLINT, MI – Nick Guerra had known his wife since they were children.
Lydia Guerra grew up on Flint’s east side, one of four siblings in a tight-knit family.
“She’s had my heart for so long. Me and her brother were best friends growing up since like kindergarten,” said Nick Guerra, days after his wife of 15 years was stabbed around 3:30 a.m. Nov. 1 inside a Thom Street home in Flint.
Lydia Guerra was transported from the scene to Hurley Medical Center where she was later pronounced deceased. She was 39 years old.

“I’ve known her every part of my life. She’s been through every stage of my life, any part of my life she’s been with me,” said Nick Guerra, 37. “She’s been through every up and down anything. She was there. She’s never left my side. She’s always been with me.”
He called the incident that led to the death of his wife “a senseless act, a misunderstanding about a pair of shoes,” adding Lydia Guerra didn’t know the person who stabbed her.
A 35-year-old woman was taken into custody in connection with the fatal stabbing.
Nick Guerra was also stabbed during the incident, but he is expected to recover from his physical wounds.
Flint Police Chief Terence Green and Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton were not able to immediately provide additional details on what may have taken place inside the home.
Deputy Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney John Potbury said Wednesday afternoon that charges have not yet been authorized against the suspect.
Nick Guerra called his wife “a great person and had a heart of gold.”
“Anybody and everybody could tell you how special she was. Lydia was beautiful,” he said. “Everybody knows her. You put that name out there and everybody knows Lyd. You don’t even have to explain it.”
Regardless of what his wife was going through, Nick Guerra said she always cared about others and even when arguments happened, he knew it was “because she cared so much.”
Nick Guerra and Angie Tidwell, Lydia’s sister, noted how she was the life of the party.
“She could literally walk in a room and make everybody laugh and smile just because she had so much light to her,” said Tidwell.
When his wife walked into a party, Nick Guerra said everyone knew her presence “because Lyd didn’t hold nothing back.”
“Lyd was the most loudest, outspoken person and anywhere you went you’d already know Lydia’s around,” he added. “She’s always dancing, smiling, laughing, just being wild...she was loved by so many and she knew the love was there."
Watching her sister around the couple’s four children -- ages 21, 17, 14, and 7 -- Tidwell could sense the love she held for them.
“She was a wonderful mother,” said Tidwell. "She had her little girl. She was a mother to all her kids, but her little girl was her little mini me. She was always with her.
“The two boys she’s done everything for them. Her whole life was just dedicated to her kids and making sure they had the best life possible.”
Tidwell also recalled her sister being a “wonderful” aunt loved all her nieces and nephew who’d goof around and play with the children at family gatherings.
“Our family will never be the same now that she’s gone,” said Tidwell. “Never.”
Tidwell has started a GoFundMe page to help pay for Lydia Guerra’s memorial services.
Flint City Councilman Santino Guerra also had some words to share about his family member lost to violence.
“My aunt was always someone that I could expect to have a huge smile on her face when I saw her,” he told MLive-The Flint Journal. “She was someone who cared about her family and her friends and always wanted everyone to have a good time. It’s heartbreaking that she was taken from us so unexpectedly. Now we just hope that justice is served.”
Nick Guerra called it a hard time right now for himself and his family.
“I’m so broke inside. I don’t know what to do,” he said through muffled sobs. “I don’t know how to react. I just want everybody to know she was a special person.”
