Sheldon Larmore — educator, author, artist, mentor and a friend to hundreds of people — died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020 at his Salisbury home.
Born James Sheldon Larmore on Oct. 30, 1935, he was 85.
He was a member of the last senior class to graduate from Wicomico High school in 1954. The building now houses Wicomico Middle School.
After graduation, he had no career plans at hand, but he knew he never ever wanted to step another foot inside a school building.
Still, in fall 1954, he entered Salisbury State Teachers College — now Salisbury University — and received a bachelor degree in 1958. He accepted his first teaching job as a 5th grade teacher in the Delmar Elementary School.
After four years of teaching, he was promoted to Principal of Willards Elementary School. Two years later, in 1964, he was named principal of the new Glen Avenue School.
He served there for five years, before accepting the responsibility of the principalship of the combined Westside Primary and Westside Intermediate schools.
During this time he received his Masters Degree in School Administration and did further graduate work at the University of Maryland and the University of Delaware.
In 1972, he was promoted to an Elementary School Supervisor, and in 1975 was named Director of Elementary Schools.
He served in that role for the next 15 years, working with a very able and supportive professional staff that he considered family.
He retired in 1990 and was invited to join the faculty of the Education Department at Salisbury University. He spent 10 years instructing juniors and seniors in methods of teaching and skills in classroom management.
During this time he was named Maryland’s “Teacher Educator of the Year.”
At SU, he enjoyed his professional relationships with members of the teaching staff and nurtured lasting friendships with many of his students.
He was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church until 2005, when he and his wife joined Trinity United Methodist Church in Salisbury.
Born in Salisbury, his parents were the late Talbot Larmore and Lillian Larmore Hope.
The two greatest treasures in his life were his wife, Sara Belle, and their son, David Jefferson Larmore.
The son was born with spina bifida, which left him disabled. Still, David Larmore was a fervent community volunteer and servant, accumulating more than 12,000 hours as a volunteer at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional.
“I met Sheldon and Sara Belle through David’s involvement with PLUS Volunteers at what was then PRMC, now TidalHealth Peninsula Regional,” said Roger Follebout, Community Relations Director for TidalHealth.
“I’ve never known a more compassionate, focused, caring and kind man than Sheldon Larmore,” he said. “What I will always remember was his love and dedication to my friend, David, and his insistence that David, with all his challenges, lead a motivated and rewarding life — a normal life — that saw him return to others more than he received from them. I’m certain that’s what blessed us with David for more than 30 years. And, when he passed, it was Sheldon who focused his attention not on his own grief but immediately reached out to David’s hospital family to make sure we were comforted. He was a remarkable and inspirational friend unlike any other.”
Sheldon Larmore authored the popular book, “Be Quiet and Listen,” which recorded the many miracles he and others witnessed throughout David’s life.
David died in 2002 at age 32. Sara Belle died earlier this year.
In addition to his parents, wife and son, he was preceded in death by his sister, Faye Littleton; and his stepfather, William Hope.
He is survived by three close friends and their families, Michele and Dan Harris, Ashley and Matt Weiss and Susie and Pete Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held in the Trinity Family Life Center on Mount Hermon Road on Monday, Dec. 21, 2020, at 11 a.m. There will be a visitation at the Holloway Funeral Home on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2020, from 2 to 4 p.m.
