AseraCare starts first palliative care program in Grand Island - KSNB Local 4

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A new palliative care program just opened up in Grand Island, making it the first of it’s kind in the area.

AseraCare who normally provides hospice care in the community saw a great need for palliative care, so they started one up and hosted a ribbon cutting and barbecue to celebrate.

“It’s new to the Grand Island area, you know, there are some programs. There’s a program in Hastings, that’s just the Hastings metro-area, so this is new and our territory is in both the Grand Island area and York,” said AseraCare Palliative Program Nurse Practitioner Molly Oertwig.

This type of care provides support for people with chronic illnesses who are not yet ready to give up treatment.

“There’s always been kind of a care gap or continuum care gap between those who are still seeking active treatment for their chronic illnesses but not ready for hospice, not ready to come off of those treatments and that’s what palliative care, that’s our role is to help bridge that gap,” Oertwig said.

Through this program, patients get help with symptom management, goals of care, education and other services.

“There’s so many patients out there that have multiple chronic illnesses, go to several different specialists, don’t understand what is going on and just need someone there to help them understand that and be able to tell them this is your disease process and as it progresses this is what it’s going to look like,” Oertwig said.

People looking to enroll in this type of program need a referral from a loved one or doctor.
