Caring Adults: Burdette, Trammel go above and beyond - Parkersburg News

We know by now how much more we are asking of teachers these days, as they fill roles far beyond traditional education. What we often forget is how important the rest of the staff in our public schools has become to children who sometimes feel safe and cared for only when they are on school grounds.

Service personnel take care of what some might call the non-education-related tasks in our schools. But the reality is without them, there wouldn’t be much learning taking place. Mid-Ohio Valley residents know how fortunate we are to have good people filling those roles in our schools, and two of them have garnered enough attention to be among the 10 finalists for the West Virginia School Service Personnel of the Year award.

Deidra Burdette, a custodian at Greenmont Elementary School in Wood County, and Angela Trammell, a secretary at Ritchie County High School, go above and beyond.

Burdette trains and mentors new employees, but also keeps a calendar of everyone’s birthdays, and according to the state Board of Education, “treats all the students as if they are her own.” She has even been known to provide Halloween costumes for those in need.

Trammell wears many hats, managing financial accounts and maintaining revenue/spending records. She uses her technology, photography and design skills to promote Ritchie County Schools and her students’ accomplishments, recreates county calendars and senior ads for the yearbook, produces homecoming shirts and more, according to the state BOE.

“These individuals truly represent what it means to be a caring adult in the lives of our students,” said West Virginia Superintendent of Schools W. Clayton Burch.

Local residents are grateful there are people like Burdette and Trammel doing good in our schools. We wish them luck as they await the announcement of the award winner Sept. 7.
