Mad River Community Hospital in Arcata and Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka made the Cal Hospital Compare honor roll for maternity care in 2020. In partnership with the California Health and Human Services Agency, Cal Hospital Compare annually recognizes 141 hospitals that have met or surpassed the statewide target aimed to reduce births via C-section in first-time mothers with low-risk pregnancies.
The CHHS began recognizing hospitals that meet the 23.9% statewide target of cesarean sections for low-risk births in 2015. Overuse of the procedure can result in higher rates of complications including hemorrhage, transfusions, infection and blood clots in mothers as well as higher rates of infection, respiratory complications, neonatal intensive care unit stays and lower breastfeeding rates for babies, according to the agency.
“Of the 141 hospitals, Mad River Community Hospital is one of 52 hospitals to have achieved honor roll status five years running,” according to a prepared statement from hospital spokesperson Pamela Floyd. “…Mad River Community Hospital is honored to be recognized for the outstanding care provided to the community.”
Mad River Community Hospital was also recognized as one of 73 adult, acute care hospitals with exceptionally high safety profiles in comparison to other hospitals for its second year, the statement said. “The Patient Safety Honor Roll offers Californians a rigorously evaluated list of hospitals that have consistently demonstrated a strong culture of safety across multiple departments.”
In addition to making the state Maternity Care Honor Roll, Providence St. Joseph Hospital was also recognized for its opioid safety practices.
To receive a 2020 opioid honor roll award, a hospital must promote safe and effective opioid use, identify and treat patients with opioid use disorder in an effort to help patients become opioid-free, according to a prepared statement from Providence St. Joseph Hospital spokesperson Christian Hill.
“We are honored to accept these recognitions at St. Joseph Hospital,” said chief executive Roberta Luskin-Hawk M.D. in a prepared statement. “Having received these recognitions for two years in a row, it stands as a testament to our exceptional obstetrics and gynecological team who support moms and babies throughout pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.”
Providence Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna was also recognized for meeting or exceeding the c-section rate in previous years, according to Hill. Redwood Memorial Hospital did not make this year’s list following Providence’s decision to close the hospital’s obstetrics unit on July 1 to consolidate services.
The services were state-mandated as a condition of the approval of the merger between St. Joseph Health and Providence Health systems. Under the agreement, women and children’s health care services were required to be provided through June 2021.
“Plans to transition to a single high-quality program, which has the support of a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on July 1, will provide an opportunity to continue to focus on these initiatives and others,” according to the statement from Hill. “By focusing services at (Providence St. Joseph), the hospital will be better able to recruit additional physicians, enhance the hospital as a robust regional medical center and build upon the award-winning obstetrics program.”
