Globally, approximately 50% of doctors experience significant burnout. This depletes healthcare resources and compromises the quality of patient care. Of particular concern, a similar proportion of medical students experience pressures so great that they burn out on the profession before they have even entered it. What is the evidence for this? What can be done to address this crisis? When will medical professionals appreciate the importance of caring for each other in the pursuit of better care for patients?
Join Mr Babulal Sethia and Professor Dame Parveen Kumar as they discuss the importance of caring, a fundamental component of the doctor-patient relationship.
Professor Dame Parveen Kumar & Mr Babulal Sethia
Professor Dame Parveen Kuman is Professor of Medicine and Education at Barts and the London School of Medicine, Queen Mary University of London, and a gastroenterologist. She has held several national and international posts. She was president of the British Medical Association and the Royal Society of Medicine. She co-founded ‘Kumar and Clark’s Clinical medicine’, and co-edited with Mr B Sethia, the ‘Essentials of Global Health’, written by 127 international medical students. She has travelled widely in LMICs. She was awarded DBE in 2017 and is the recipient of many honorary degrees and prizes.
Mr Babulal Sethia was a Consultant Congenital Heart Surgeon at the Royal Brompton Hospital until 2019 and is a past-President of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) in London. He was an examiner for the UK Surgical Royal Colleges for many years and, throughout his career, maintained a strong commitment to the training of congenital heart surgeons. He also worked with a number of international charities to promote healthcare education and the delivery of congenital heart services for the benefit of children living in resource-poor countries. At the RSM he helped to develop a Global Health programme. He has contributed to over 60 peer-reviewed publications, has given over 150 presentations at National and International meetings and co-edited, with Professor Parveen Kumar, a book entitled ‘Essentials of Global Health’ (Elsevier 2018).
