Employees from dozens of local companies and organizations spent the day volunteering on Tuesday as the United Way of Meriden/ Wallingford held its annual Day of Caring.
Dennis Greenblatt, a marketing employee at Mirion Technologies (Canberra) Inc. in Meriden, said the company has volunteered for the Day of Caring and raised money for the United way for years.
“I personally know people in our company that have had difficult times in their lives and were helped tremendously by the United Way,” he said. “So I know...what a good organization this is.”
Mirion Technologies delivers “world class products, services and solutions in the world of radiation detection, protection and measurement,” according to its website.
Employees from the tech company helped Kuhn Employment Opportunities in Meriden by detail cleaning over a dozen vans and helping with the landscaping in front of the building Tuesday morning.
Kuhn Employment is a non-profit organization that assists people with disabilities acquire and retain employment.
Mirion employees Lauren Lucibello and Sara Haney, who volunteered for the first time this year, said they enjoyed the work and learning about Kuhn.
“It’s so awesome what they do here,” said Haney, an associate marketing designer.
Other volunteers included employees from the Record-Journal, who helped out Catholic Charities and the Spanish Community of Wallingford. Wallingford Rotary members volunteered time at the Wallingford Public Library.
“Being able to give back was great,” said Lucibello, a web and multimedia specialist. “With the vans...this is how they get to work every day. Being able to provide them with a clean environment especially during the pandemic is so important.”
Geoff Crandall, director of programs at Kuhn, said he looks forward to the Day of Caring because it’s an opportunity to showcase what United Way does for organizations. It’s also a chance to meet new people and create connections that could benefit Kuhn clients in the for future.
“It’s great to have them come out and help us,” Crandall said. “These things are so important but sometimes hard for us to get to often.”
