CenterWell Senior Primary Care Center Administrator Courtney Stephens-George held the oversized scissors while Dr. Jodine Sejour-Donatien and others made sure the white ribbon was still. The new senior medical facility opened Tuesday morning and began taking patients soon after.
Grand Opening
While gospel music played from the Praise 102.5 tent, visitors, staff, law enforcement and emergency medical service workers milled about the parking lot prior to Morrow Mayor John Lampl took the microphone to discuss the opening and necessity of a senior medical facility in the Clayton County town, located 15 miles south of Atlanta. “We are very thankful for CenterWell opening a healthcare center in our community,” said Lampl. “Our seniors deserve the best care and we are making a personal commitment to [CenterWell] to give you what you need to be successful.” Lampl was joined by Morrow Interim City Manager Jeff Moss and other members of the city council.
Sejour-Donatien, the Associate Medical Director at CenterWell also took time to thank those assembled and spoke of the need for a facility like this in Clayton County. “We build our centers thinking about how we can keep our patients safe and comfortable,” she said. Sejour-Donatien, a graduate of Morehouse School of Medicine, said she was proud to be back in Atlanta after taking her talents to South Florida “Like Lebron did, but got my senses back and came home.”
New to the neighborhood
George Wheeler, CenterWell Market President for the Carolinas and Georgia, spoke of the company opening five more facilities within the next six months, starting with a grand opening of the Wesley Chapel location December 4. There are similar facilities set to open in Adamsville in February 2022, Grove Park in mid 2022 and Stone Mountain to follow. The Old National Highway location was the company’s first in Georgia.
All of these centers are going into neighborhoods that can be described as senior facility deserts. “We do a lot of work on the front end to identify the neighborhoods that need senior medical facilities,” said Wheeler an hour before the grand opening. “At CenterWell we treat the whole patient. We work to help patients get back to, and improve their health.”
The new facility will cater to patients 65 years old and over and Medicaid eligible. To date, metro Atlanta has more than 100,000 residents that are over 65 years old, yet there are very few senior centers like what CenterWell is bringing to some of Georgia’s oldest Black neighborhoods. “I really think this is a great opportunity for this community,” said Dr. Donessa Fraser, a 22-year veteran practitioner. “Our patients will have the chance to see doctors that will focus on their needs.”

The Morrow center was built to better the experience of going to the doctor’s office, according to Tiffany Pizarro, Market Vice President of Operations. “It’s extremely important because if our patients don’t have a great experience they won’t come back,” she said.
The center has a spacious activity room, which is open to the public, whether they have an appointment or not, according to Stephens-George, who said she was excited about what CenterWell was “bringing to Morrow.” A monthly calendar of activities is available via the CenterWell website.
Every hallway in the facility has been widened to better accommodate wheelchair-bound patients and others with mobility issues. There are also non-slip floors throughout the center and a complimentary coffee and snack station in the waiting room. The walls are full of photos of local attractions, including the Jonesboro City Hall sign and a photo of Atlanta Motor Speedway in nearby Hampton. A point of pride during a tour of the facility was the examination rooms. Each of the rooms, a dozen in all, will have a Brewer Chair inside for patient exams. The state-of-the-art chairs allow patients with mobility issues to be able to hop on and off for exams without having to climb onto a table.
