CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - With winter temperatures setting in, officers at Metro Animal Shelter see an increase in calls from concerned residents about pets they see outdoors.

“A lot of times dogs are outside and people just want to make sure that they’re okay. A lot of times it’s just people just driving by or walking by and they get that few second glimpse of that situation and they just want to make sure. Most people in this town care about animals and want to make sure they’re safe,” said Stephanie Tarbett, the lead animal protection officer.

If your animal is outside in these conditions, Tarbett suggests making sure their shelter is large enough for them to fit in comfortably. She also recommends putting blankets inside to make it more cozy for your pet. Tarbett says if your animal enjoys being out in the snow or cold weather, a jacket could be a good idea. Heated water bowls are a way to ensure your pet’s water is not freezing. If you have a fenced-in yard, officials recommend checking the space to make sure your pet cannot get over it.

“Take a look in your yard before you let the dog out in the morning. Kind of see where the snowfall is compared to the fence line and make sure it’s not something the dog can just use the snow to jump over the fence,” said Tarbett.

Staff at Metro encourages residents to make sure their pet’s ID tag has the correct information just in case they get out.
