We are about one month into the new year. In health care, it has been a challenging month filled with long hours, a surge in COVID cases, and continuing supply chain disruptions that require creativity and extra effort to overcome.
Traditionally, the arrival of a new year is an opportune time to reflect on our gifts and express gratitude for the people whose involvement in our lives is a blessing. With the challenges and pressure of the past month, I want to express my gratitude once again.
For the last two years, Oklahoma’s health care workers have faced intense and unprecedented challenges. Today, our health care system is once again facing the pressure of a surge in COVID cases. From ambulances to emergency rooms to the intensive care unit, there is no part of the health care continuum that is not facing mounting challenges. Additionally, the virality of the now-dominant omicron variant is taking record numbers of health care workers and support staff out of work.
This latest surge has once again tested our health care system. However, I am continually impressed and humbled to see caregivers stepping up to the plate to meet the needs of our community. Much has been said about our heroic nurses and physicians, but caregivers of all backgrounds are stepping up and deserve to be recognized as well.
As an example, our hospitals have recently been challenged with an unusually high number of absences from of our housekeeping teams. Our housekeepers play a crucial role in keeping our facilities clean and safe, and they are essential for safe patient care. I’ve been humbled to see caregivers from across our system step up to take shifts working with our housekeepers to ensure we continue to meet our community’s needs.
It takes a team to deliver high-quality health care. Right now, every member of the team is stepping up to make sure our community is properly served.
President Kennedy once said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” This month, I challenge us all to once again express gratitude for our health care heroes not just with words, but by taking steps to make their lives easier. Please join me in getting a COVID vaccine and booster shot and taking the steps you can in your life to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
