After a chilly week, it will be nice to unwind with some fun events. There’s plenty in store this weekend, especially in the way of music, from ‘90s tunes to jazz performances. Also, check out some scaly exhibits featuring reptiles – both living and long extinct. Here’s the weekend lineup:
Audre Lorde and Radical Self Care, 6-7:30 p.m., Jan. 13, online. In her 1988 book of essays “A Burst of Light,” author and activist Audre Lorde wrote about the importance of self care – not as self indulgence but as self preservation and “an act of political warfare.” Baltimore Racial Justice Action is exploring the writer’s work and legacy in an online event titled “Reclaiming the Roots of Audre Lorde’s Radical Self Care.” The event will also include a guided meditation to help participants practice radical self care themselves.
Sinatra and Fitzgerald, Jan. 13-16, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Singers Capathia Jenkins and Tony DeSare will bring to life the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra alongside the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in this weekend’s “Sinatra and Friends” show. Selections will include “Come Fly With Me,” “The Lady is a Tramp,” and more classics from Fitzgerald and Sinatra’s songbooks.
Jurassic Quest, Jan. 14-17, Maryland State Fairgrounds. Organizers describe Jurassic Quest as “the largest exhibition of lifesize, moving, museum-quality dinosaurs in North America.” Guests will be able to experience more than 100 life-like replicas of dinosaurs and other creatures from the Cretaceous, Jurassic and Triassic periods, with exhibits developed in collaboration with paleontologists. From the Tyrannosaurus rex to Triceratops to a 50-foot megalodon, this event sounds like a roaring good time.
LaxCon, Jan. 14-16, Baltimore Convention Center. After going virtual in 2021, the USA Lacrosse Convention – or LaxCon – is back in person in Baltimore for 2022. Members of the lacrosse community will be able to learn from leaders in the sport, check out the latest gear and tech, and meet others who share their love of lacrosse.
Repticon, Jan. 15-16, Maryland State Fairgrounds. Herpetorama Inc. is bringing their reptile and exotic animal show to Baltimore. Check out reptiles from around the world, live animal presentations, and a venomous reptile display. Vendors will also be selling pets and supplies (just remember to purchase thoughtfully and responsibly).
Stephanie and Saar, 2 p.m., Jan. 15, An Die Musik Live! DUO Stephanie & Saar, a collaboration between pianists Stephanie Ho and Saar Ahuvia, will dazzle and delight audiences with their elegant music. The pair will play pieces by Bach, Beethoven and others.
Flashback to the Nineties, 8 p.m., Jan. 15, Rams Head Live. If ‘90s music is your fire, the one desire, prepare to take a step back in time. The group Saved by the 90s, hailing from New York City, will travel to Rams Head Live this weekend. From Third Eye Blind to the Spice Girls, from The Backstreet Boys to The Beastie Boys, the band will be playing some of the greatest hits of the end of the 20th century.
The Black Mall, 2-7 p.m., Jan. 16, 6 East Lafayette Ave. Visit the two-floor market featuring Black-owned businesses. Items include artwork, jewelry, clothing, books, comics, fabric, bags, candles, natural hair care products, vegan and non-vegan food, and more.
Bob Butta, 3 p.m., Jan. 16, An Die Musik Live! Jazz pianist Bob Butta will present his third solo appearance on An Die Musik’s stage. After releasing his debut album “Windows” in 1997, this Baltimore musician will continue to enthrall audiences with his jazz performances.
Loving You Forever, 7 p.m., Jan. 16, Rams Head Live. The Loving You Forever Tour, featuring Kenny Lattimore, Ruff Endz and J. Brown, and hosted by comedian Antoine Scott, is coming to Baltimore. The R&B and soul singers will serenade audiences with music all about love.
