Gophers Take Care of Business, Sweep Michigan - GopherSports.com

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 9 Minnesota Golden Gophers volleyball team defeated the Michigan Wolverines in three sets, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22.

Taylor Landfair led Minnesota with 20 kills while Carter Booth tallied 11 kills with four blocks. CC McGraw paced the backcourt with 17 digs.

As a team, Minnesota (14-7, 9-4 Big Ten) hit .310 with 46 kills, five team blocks, 49 digs and two aces. Michigan (14-9, 5-8 Big Ten) hit .200 with 42 kills, three team blocks, 46 digs and five aces.

May Pertofsky led Michigan with 10 kills.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The two teams were neck and neck through the first 18 points before two aces and a kill put the Wolverines up 12-9. The Gophers would answer with a 6-1 run to head into the media timeout with a 15-13 lead. Kills from Carter Booth and Melani Shaffmaster in addition to a pair of blocks by Booth aided Minnesota in the spurt. The 'U' kept its strong play going after the media break, scoring four of the next five to go up 19-14. A kill from Taylor Landfair and two more from Booth gave the home team its set-high lead. The Wolverines would get no closer than three the rest of the way as Minnesota took set one, 25-21. Landfair had seven kills, Booth had four and Jenna Wenaas had three.

Set 2: Michigan and Minnesota split the first eight points before a 5-1 Gophers run put the home team up 9-5. Melani Shaffmaster tallied an ace while Landfair had a kill in the run. Michigan sliced the lead in half to 9-7 before a block from Arica Davis and Landfair and a kill from Lauren Crowl put the 'U' up 12-7, forcing a Michigan timeout. Kills from Davis and Crowl helped the Gophers go up seven at 15-8 before the Wolverines made a comeback. Michigan would go on an 8-1 run, slicing the Minnesota lead to one point at 17-16. They got a pair of aces, a trio of kills and a couple Minnesota errors in the spurt. A pair of Michigan errors and a kill from Landfair helped the Gophers go back up three at 20-17. The Gophers would go up 22-18 before Michigan called its last timeout. The Wolverines got no closer than three the rest of the way at 23-20 before Booth finished the set with two kills. Minnesota sealed the set with a 25-20 win to go up 2-0. The Gophers hit .296 in set two compared to .161 for UM. Landfair led the team with four kills in the frame.

Set 3: Michigan came out of the gates hot in set three, scoring five of the first six to go up 5-1. The Gophers would fight right back, tallying six of the next seven to take their first lead of the set. Booth, Landfair and Shaffmaster had kills in the run while Booth and Shaffmaster combined for a block. UM scored the next three to go up 9-7 on a pair of kills and a block. The Wolverines would keep their two to three point lead all the way up to 14-11 until Minnesota made its move. Four straight kills from Landfair put the Gophers back up one, 15-14, heading into the media timeout. Booth tallied a kill to put her team up two before a 3-1 run by UM tied it at 17. The two teams exchanged ties and one-point leads until 20-20, when a Michigan service error and a kill from Landfair put the 'U' up 22-20, forcing a timeout from the Wolverines. Another kill from the redshirt sophomore put the home team up 23-20 before two points from UM sliced the advantage to one. A Michigan service error and a kill from Booth clinched the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0, for Minnesota.

UP NEXT: Minnesota (14-7, 9-4 Big Ten) takes on Illinois (11-12, 6-7 Big Ten) at 1 p.m. on Sunday on the road. B1G+ will provide streaming coverage.

Notable:
-Minnesota moves to 61-16 all-time vs. Michigan, winning 12 of the last 14 in the series.
-CC McGraw (17) tallied her 97th career 10+ dig outing, including her 12th this season. She's now up to 1,796 for her career, just 74 behind Dalianliz Rosado for the No. 3 spot in Minnesota laurels.
-It was McGraw's fifth 15+ dig match of the season and 57th of her career.
-Taylor Landfair (20) totaled double digit kills for the 21st time this season and 39th time in her career. She's one of two Power Five players in the country to have double digit kills in every match.
-It was Landfair's fourth 20+ kill match of the year and sixth in her career.

-Carter Booth posted her second 10+ kill match of the year.
-The Gophers (.310) hit over .300 for the 10th time this season in 21 games.

-Rachel Kilkelly tallied 10 digs, her third 10+ dig match of 2022, and second consecutive.
