Child care centers carry on in the midst of COVID-19 - KAAL

Right now, they have several new policies to help fight COVID-19, including not giving tours or taking in new children at this time.

But each child care center is different. Across town, Discover Magical Moments Daycare is open to taking in new children.

"They can call and we'll do the best that we can,” said Renae Loth-Birch.

But she said there are complications.

"I'm afraid that if we take new children on then what happens when it's all done? Are they still going to have the spots of our other children,” she said.  “Most of our parents are going to pay for the spots. Even if they are not here just to ensure they have them when it's done. Because we still need to pay our employees, pay for our building and keep everything running smoothly.”

Typically, they only accept children six weeks to six years old. But since the coronavirus pandemic, they decided to take siblings of kids already enrolled up to 12 years old. It’s an effort to take the burden off of parents who still have to work, like health care providers.

"They have been gracious. Thanking us up one side and down the other as far as to stay open," she said.

At the governor’s direction, Rochester Public Schools will provide free child care to children of emergency and health care workers kindergarten through age 12. But that still leaves those with younger kids dependent on daycares.

"It is so critical right now that the daycare centers stay open for Mayo employees and Olmsted employees,” she said.

But that’s not an option for all places, including Listos Preschool and Child care.

"Our preschool follows the Rochester Public Schools schedule so when there is a snow day or cancellation by the Rochester Public Schools our half-day preschool also closes,” said Program Director Courtney Caron.

Listos does also offer a full-day child care program for children 3 to 5-years-old, which will stay open for now.

"Our plan is to combine classrooms and just have our full-day child care. To be honest, it is day by day,” she said.

For now, all three child care centers are doing what they can to make sure they are there for the families that need them.
