CLEVELAND, Ohio — Finding child care in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic is no easy task, as some preschools and daycare centers are closing, and Gov. Mike DeWine is urging parents to avoid daycare sites.
But the three-week shutdown of Ohio’s schools, which puts many young children at home while parents have to work, will put some families in a bind.
Starting Point, the official child care referral agency for Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lake counties, is a place to start your search.
Starting Point maintains a list of all 2,000 preschools and day care centers in the region, along with those that have open seats and those that are full, so staff can refer parents that call their 24-hour line at 216-575-0061 or 800-880-0971.
Billie Osborne-Fears, Starting Point’s executive director, said her staff can give parents leads of possible openings. But she warned that the coronavirus is making her list out-of-date by the minute. Sites may close out of fear of spreading the virus. Some may close because staff have caught it, or a relative has. Or staff may need to be at home with their own children.
And centers may have just filled seats.
“Child care centers, just like any other business, are making decisions of a day-to-day basis,” she said. “What might be open Monday might not be open the following Monday.”
So she cautions parents to expect to call centers to verify that they are still open and not count on any seats being available.
“It’s just a terrible situation,” she said.
Osborne-Fears and Rebekah Dorman, who heads Cuyahoga County’s Universal Pre-K program, each said they hope to find out more early next week about which centers are staying open and which are closing.
