Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine suggests parents find day care alternatives in case of closings because of coronavirus - cleveland.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine advised parents Friday to find alternatives to day care in the event he later orders a closing of childcare centers across the state.

“Daycare facilities: we are not closing them at this point, but that’s something that may occur in the future,” DeWine said during his daily update on coronavirus.

DeWine went on to encourage parents to work now to find alternatives, and recommended removing children if a parent has alternatives, noting that he realized this would be difficult for some people.

“If you are in a position economically, otherwise, and can figure out how to do it, the recommendation from the medical community is that you remove your child from day care,” DeWine said.

DeWine detailed his recommendations on day care facilities one day after ordering the closing of all K-12 schools in Ohio starting next week.

DeWine said day care facilities with very young children “impose a unique risk. It’s hard to enforce a 6-foot rule." The governor noted the concerns of older Ohioans being susceptible to becoming infected with coronavirus, and his concern of a child introducing the virus to an older adult.

“If the person who is taking care of your child is 60 or over, you need to look at that,” he said, mentioning that grandparents often care for kids. “Again, not because of the child, but because of that person who is 60 or over.

"The risk goes up, and goes up rather dramatically the older that person is. Everyone needs to be mindful of that.”

DeWine said state regulators would relax the teachers-per-student requirements to make it easier for sick teachers to leave work.
