Senior care nonprofits Menorah Park and Montefiore announce plan to merge - Crain's Cleveland Business

Two of Northeast Ohio's largest senior-care nonprofits are merging.

Menorah Park and Montefiore, both based in Beachwood, announced on Wednesday, March 4, that they are joining forces to form one organization that will operate under the Menorah Park name, although the Montefiore name will remain on its facility on the campus. The boards of both nonprofits approved the combination on Tuesday, March 3, and they plan for the affiliation to take effect on June 30. The merger will create an approximately $120 million nonprofit, based on each organization's 2019 expenses.

Menorah Park, founded in 1906, employs 1,400 people at its 42-acre campus on Cedar Road. Montefiore, with a campus adjacent to Menorah Park, was founded in 1882 and employs 600.

The organizations said in a news release that James Newbrough, currently CEO of Menorah Park, will continue as CEO of the combined nonprofit. Seth Vilensky, currently president and CEO of Montefiore, will become vice president of business development and community services for the organization.

Crain's most recent list of Northeast Ohio's largest nursing homes, ranked by the number of certified skilled beds and published in February 2019, had Menorah Park at No. 1, with 355, and Montefiore at No. 3, with 233. (The bed data were as of Jan. 31, 2019.)

On Crain's most recent list of Northeast Ohio nonprofits, which ran in December 2019 and was ranked by 2019 expenses, Menorah Park was No. 6, with expenses of $82 million. Montefiore was No. 19 on that list, with expenses of $42.7 million.

Newbrough said in a statement that at present, "our two organizations compete with each other for many of the same residents and clients. We use resources managing two very similar organizations. If we think about good stewardship that drives both our organizations, it makes a lot more sense to focus those resources in ways that will allow us to build on the excellent services we already provide — and to do it together."

He said there are "a lot of details we still need to work out" in completing the affiliation, but added, "We've already done extensive research and due diligence, so we know this is the right path for our two organizations to take."

Beth Rosenberg, president of Menorah Park's board, said the combination "brings together two organizations built around Jewish values, with a common mission: to provide high-quality health care to adults as they age by offering a range of services in a variety of settings."

Vilensky said his organization looks forward "to sharing best practices, expanding programs and enhancing the excellent range of services we both already provide." Ira Goffman, chair of Montefiore's board, added, "Our facilities are not only physically close to each other, we couldn't be more closely aligned in how we approach the challenges of a changing health care system along with a growing population that expects more at every stage of life."

Menorah Park provides health care and residential choices for adults in settings ranging from apartments for independent living and assisted living, to skilled nursing care, memory care, rehabilitation services, adult day care, home health and hospice services.

Montefiore provides skilled nursing care, rehabilitation therapy, home health care, memory care, assisted living and hospice.
