NYU Langone Joins U.S. Health Care Climate Council - NYU Langone Health

NYU Langone Health announced it has signed on as the newest member of the U.S. Health Care Climate Council, a leadership body of health systems committed to protecting their patients and employees from the health impacts of climate change and becoming anchors for resilient communities.

“As a leading healthcare system, it is important to create a healthy environment for our patients and staff, and to recognize that climate change is a global health issue that has a direct impact on the communities we serve,” says Robert I. Grossman, MD, dean of NYU Grossman School of Medicine and CEO of NYU Langone Health. “As such, our commitment to sustainability must extend across every facet of NYU Langone, and we are proud to be the first hospital in New York City to join the Health Care Climate Council.”

Established by Health Care Without Harm, Health Care Climate Council members implement innovative climate solutions, inspire and support others to act, and use their collective voice and purchasing power to move policy and markets to drive the transformation to climate-smart healthcare. The 19 member systems represent 500 hospitals in 36 states that serve 75 million patients annually and employee 1 million people.

"We are thrilled to welcome NYU Langone to the Health Care Climate Council,” says Gary Cohen, president and cofounder of Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth. “Their investments in resilient hospital design coupled with an ambitious carbon reduction goal show how climate-smart healthcare and world-class patient care go hand in hand.”

NYU Langone has been recognized numerous times for its sustainability achievements, including most recently the 2019 Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award for distinction in sustainable practices, the 2020 Circles of Excellence awards for Energy and Green Buildings, and the 2020 Greening the OR award, all from Practice Greenhealth; the 2019 Climate and Health Innovation Award; and the CHP Champion Award from the Northeast Clean Heat & Power Initiative.

In 2018 NYU Langone received Performance Excellence in Electricity Renewal (PEER) Platinum certification for the high-performing and resilient power and energy systems at its main campus in midtown Manhattan from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). NYU Langone was the first campus and first hospital in the world to receive PEER Platinum accreditation.

Coupled with more recent USGBC Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certifications for both its Kimmel Pavilion and Science Building research hub, NYU Langone’s main campus is also now the first double Platinum campus in the world under these certifications.
