Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford is moving forward with plans to improve community health care access with four new projects underway.
Satellite hospital
Plans have been approved by the Tennessee Health Services and Development agency for Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford to build Tennessee’s first neighborhood hospital in the Westlawn community, spokeswoman Michelle Heard confirmed.
Estimated cost for the neighborhood hospital will be $24.6 million. Construction will begin this fall and completed in early 2022. Ascension Saint Thomas announced plans in April.
The two-story, 32,000-square-foot facility will be near Veterans Parkway and Shores Road off Interstate 840. The location offers easy access to other medical facilities like Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance, Saint Thomas Rutherford hospital and Murfreesboro Medical Clinic.
The first floor will house eight private, inpatient medical beds and eight emergency department treatment rooms, as well as imaging modalities like CT scanning and laboratory services.
Outpatient services and medical office space will be located on the second floor. Telemedicine will be available as well.
The Westlawn project kicks off on the heels of the completion of a 72-bed vertical expansion at Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro.
New surgicenter
Representatives from Ascension Saint Thomas and United Surgical Partners International were on hand Aug. 20 at a groundbreaking for the New Salem Surgery Center, located at the corner of New Salem Highway and St. Andrews Drive in Murfreesboro.
The 13,000-square-foot multi-speciality ambulatory care center is a joint-venture between Ascension Saint Thomas and United Surgical Partners International, the nation's largest ambulatory services provider.
Specialties available at the new surgicenter will include urology, gastroenterology, general surgery, and ear, nose and throat treatment.
Total project budget is a little over $11.1 million, which includes facilities lease of $3 million. The surgicenter will have 25 full-time employees and three to four supplemental staff.
Target opening date is June 2021, confirmed Ascension spokeswoman Anjali Sood.
County, Ascension partnership
Ascension Saint Thomas and Rutherford County government have partnered to provide on-site and near-site clinic services for county employees and dependents, as well as county retirees. Services will be offered staring Sept. 1.
“This unique partnership of on-site and near-site clinics with Rutherford County is an example of Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford's overall commitment to care for the community it serves,” said Gordon Ferguson, president & CEO of Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford. “We look forward to the opportunity to work with the County to keep our community members healthy.”
Near-site clinics will be located at:
- Walter Hill Elementary, 6309 Lebanon Road, Murfreesboro
- Stewarts Creek Elementary, 200 Red Hawk Parkway, Smyrna
- Ascension Medical Group New Salem Clinic, 2723 New Salem Highway, Murfreesboro
Those covered under the Rutherford County insurance will get full-service, primary care practice services such as disease management and health coaching; medical exams and assessments; self-care and consumer education; health and wellness incentive program administration; acute and primary care; case management services; retail availability for extended clinic services; telemedicine; and mobile health and mammography.
Hospital care to home
Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford is offering patients Hospital Care at Home, bringing all the essential elements of inpatient care to the comfort and convenience of patients’ homes.
“Our goal is to keep the individuals we are privileged to serve healthy, and Hospital Care at Home will enhance and expand the efficacy and safety of the comprehensive care options across our system of care," said Gordon Ferguson, president & CEO, Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital.
This healthcare option for non-life-threatening conditions offers cost-effective care while reserving hospital beds for the sickest patients, Ferguson said.
Ascension Saint Thomas, in partnership with Nashville-based Contessa, was the first health system in Tennessee to introduce home-based hospital care at Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown and West facilities in 2019.
Rutherford County and surrounding areas will now have access to this type of care, which is "gaining national momentum" in the wake up the COVID-19 pandemic, said Travis Messina, CEO of Contessa.
A medical clinical team will be available 24 hours a day for telemedicine, acute registered nurse care in the home, and a recovery care coordinator for patient contact.
Hospital Care at Home is covered by eligible Cigna and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee members, with plans of expanding to other payers soon.
