SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – We have all had to adopt some extra hygiene habits as we have been adjusting back to work.

Now our kids will be doing the same as they head back to school. They will be adapting to some significant changes as schools boost their health and safety protocols to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Schools can be one of the biggest culprits in the spread of germs, and districts are working hard to keep that at a minimum.

But you can get a head start by preparing your child with some general knowledge and habits they can follow to lower their risk of sharing germs with others.

Here are five general tips to think about before sending your kids back to school

  1. Always follow school new health and safety guidelines.
  2. If your child isn’t feeling well or has any symptoms, keep them home.
  3. If they are old enough, send them to school with hand sanitizer and teach them how to use it.
    1. Even though washing with soap and water is still the best defense against germs, hand sanitizer is a good alternative when soap and water is not available
  4. Teach them germ etiquette
    1. If they sneeze or cough, sneeze into their elbow or a tissue, then throw it away.
    2. If other kids seem sick, keep their distance.
    3. Wash hands often, especially before and after eating lunch and after using the restroom.
  5. It’s ok not to share.
    1. Send kids to school with their own supplies, such as pencils.
    2. Remind them not to share phones or makeup with others.
    3. At lunch, never share or trade food or drinks with others
