United Way of Bartholomew County’s Day of Caring on Friday includes 250 volunteers and 31 local projects.
Local residents will be building accessibility ramps, installing playground equipment, painting, planting flowers, cleaning up along riverbanks, weeding and mulching and more.
The annual outreach is a full-day event that connects local businesses and community members with non-profit and residential volunteer projects in Bartholomew County.
Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are involved.
This year’s event will be slightly different considering the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers say their top priority is the health and safety of everyone involved.
Indoor projects will be limited to a maximum of six to eight volunteers per four-hour shift and will be determined by facility size. Outdoor projects will be limited to a maximum of 20 volunteers per shift and is based on the size of the outdoor space. Adherence to CDC guidelines regarding mask usage and social distancing will be used at every site.
Last year’s event was canceled because of COVID-19, but some previous Day of Caring days have attracted about 1,000 volunteers.
The Day of Caring began in 1993 as another way for residents to meet local needs, and better understand services provided by local nonprofits and United Way agencies.
On that inaugural Day of Caring, 100 volunteers divided into approximately 26 teams of people fanned out across the community to help organizations such as the then-Bartholomew County Senior Center, Turning Point Domestic Violence Services, Foundation for Youth and Sans Souci.
