Thursday was the United Way Day of Caring, a chance for local businesses to get out and help their community.
The Day of Caring is the area’s largest single day volunteering event and takes place the third Thursday in September.
Businesses can adopt projects ranging from painting to building maintenance for non-profits such as the Great Lakes Children’s Museum.
United Way says there are fewer volunteers this year due to the labor shortage.
“They unfortunately don’t have the staff capacity to send out 50 or 60 volunteers like they have in the past,” said Jessica Tibbs, Marketing Director for United Way of Northwest Michigan. “The labor shortage has definitely affected the volunteer numbers this year but we’re still so thankful for our business community that still showed up not only with physical labor but monetary donations as well.”
United Way also collected school supplies for third grade teachers in the five county area as part of the Day of Caring.
