Gov. Greg Abbott announced an initiative Monday from Care.com and the state to provide more in-home child care for frontline workers as Texas battles the COVID-19 pandemic.
The program aims to help workers fighting the spread of the new coronavirus while offering opportunities to caregivers and volunteers.
"This Care.com initiative will provide an additional avenue of support for our frontline workers throughout the COVID-19 response," Abbott said in the media release.
Care.com is opening up access for frontline workers responding to the COVID-19 emergency by offering 90 days of free, premium access to the online platform, according to a media release from the Governor's Office on Monday.
The company is also providing specific web portals for those workers and caregivers in Texas.
Frontline workers looking for child care and prospective caregivers can enroll at texasfrontline.care.com, according to the Governor's Office.
Caregivers are subject to Care.com’s extensive background and safety checks.
The program serves Texas frontline employees looking for child care outside of normal business hours and those who have other special needs, according to the website.
Child care services are not typically free of charge, but the Texas portal gives residents the ability to waive their fees and volunteer as caregivers, providing additional support to frontline workers, according to a Care.com spokeswoman.
Care.com is partnering with the state's Frontline Child Care effort serving Texas workers battling to stop the spread of COVID-19.
"We are connecting the families who need care most with caregivers willing to help," Care.com's site for Texas frontline workers and caregivers said.
Abbott said he is grateful for Care.com's commitment to ensuring child care is available to Texans who are fulfilling essential services during the COVID-19 emergency.
Care.com Chief Executive Officer Tim Allen said the company is honored to partner with Abbott and the state for the initiative.
"We are all dependent on the commitment of these essential workers as they look after our families, and they deserve nothing less from each of us," Allen said.
