Dr. Clayton Chau, who previously spent more than a decade in the Orange County Health Care Agency’s behavioral health division, has been named the agency’s new director.
The county announced the selection of Chau on Monday, April 27 – about a month after the position opened up when Richard Sanchez left it to head CalOptima, which provides health insurance to the county’s low-income residents.
“Dr. Chau brings a wealth of experience to HCA, particularly within the realm of behavioral health. I look forward to working with him on tackling our greatest healthcare issues,” county CEO Frank Kim said in a news release.
Much of Chau’s background is in behavioral and mental health, according to the news release.
He most recently served as chief clinical and strategy officer for Mind OC, a nonprofit that oversees a public-private collaboration to build facilities and provide mental health services. From 1999 to 2012, Chau worked for the county health agency’s behavioral health services team.
Chau’s resume also includes executive positions with the nonprofit L.A. Care Health Plan and Providence Health System.
He takes over the county health care agency at a busy time, and also one of increased scrutiny, as the agency directs the local public health response to the coronavirus outbreak.
He also will soon have a vacancy of his own to fill, after agency Director of Public Health Services David Souleles last week announced his retirement effective May 1.
