Child care needs expand during pandemic - The Courier=Times

The Person County Partnership for Children has refocused plans for the organization’s most beloved week of the year – Week of the Young Child – as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. While the month of April is typically filled with events and gatherings promoting Child Abuse Prevention Month, early childhood literacy, and child care provider appreciation, this year’s celebration will look quite different, but it will go on from April 13-17th.

The major shift for the partnership has been to bring attention to the urgent needs of local child care providers in the midst of uncertain times. Though considered essential businesses by Gov. Roy Cooper’s Stay-at-Home order, open child care centers and homes are now subject to new regulations, including stringent daily health screenings to protect children and staff, and a requirement that priority care be given to children of essential workers.

“A time like this can reveal the true strength of a community, and right now we are watching some of our county’s often forgotten, but most essential workers, step up to the front line to see to it that our children remain safe and loved,” said Allison Satterfield, Executive Director of the partnership.

To help prevent resource and supply shortages from impacting care, this year’s Week of the Young Child will kick off with a supply drive at the partnership office on Monday, April 13. The partnership will be collecting items from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday at 111 S. Main St. in Roxboro.

Items needed include disinfectant spray, antibacterial wipes, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, antibacterial soap, and toilet paper. Monetary contributions can also be made on the Person County Partnership for Children Facebook page.

For families seeking childcare, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has partnered with the North Carolina Child Care Resource and Referral network to launch a hotline to provide child care options for children of critical workers. Anyone in need of emergency child care due to COVID-19 closures can call 1-888-600-1685. Financial assistance may also be available.
