Marin expands ‘pop-up’ child care during pandemic - Marin Independent Journal

Marin County is accepting applications for enrollment in a new “pop-up” child care program for essential workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

The program launched March 19 for the families of hospital workers, but the county has expanded enrollment this month to provide care for the children of first responders, disaster service workers and people who work in any industry the federal government deems “essential” during the coronavirus pandemic, officials said.

Schools and most day-care centers in Marin have closed amid the statewide stay-at-home order, leaving some parents who are still working during the crisis with few options for child care. It’s essential for local governments and organizations to help fill that gap, said Susan Gilmore, president and CEO of the nonprofit North Bay Children’s Center, which has partnered with the county in creating the pop-up program.

“What’s become clear during this emergency situation is how essential child care is,” Gilmore said. “Not having access to child care could bring everything to a screeching halt with our first responders and emergency workers.”

Through the pop-up program, child care is offered at six sites throughout the county, including three in Novato, two in San Rafael and one in Kentfield.

The cost of the program is $1,554 per month for infants, toddlers and preschool-aged children; $24 per day for children in grades TK through fifth, at a minimum of three days per week; and free for children in sixth through 12th grades. Participants can apply for tuition discounts.

The program does not offer drop-in child care, and participants must apply for the program through an online survey at marincounty.org.

Breakfast and lunch will be served at each location in the program, and participants are asked not to bring outside food, except for breast milk and formula.

Children will be separated into groups no larger than 12. Groups will complete distance learning programs assigned by schools, watch daily movies, participate in group activities and have free play time.

Workers are taking extra precautions to stem the spread of the coronavirus at the child care centers, said Jacalyn Mah, a county administrative services manager. Children will not be allowed to share toys, will be isolated from other groups and will be monitored for signs of illness by program leaders, among other precautions.

The program is a collaboration between Marin County, San Rafael, the county Office of Education, public school districts, the Marin County Free Library, the North Bay Children’s Center, Community Action Marin, Marin YMCA, and North Marin Community Services.
