Wilmington nursing home begins transformation to coronavirus care center - Boston Herald

The AdviniaCare nursing home in Wilmington is temporarily converting into a care center for recovering coronavirus patients as part of a statewide effort to both expand treatment capacity and free up space at overflowing hospitals, the facility announced Tuesday night.

Officials from Pointe Group Care, AdviniaCare’s parent company, said they will begin transferring their current residents and patients to other facilities in the region in order to free up their 142 beds, a decision made at the request of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services.

“It is our hope that the sacrifices made by our residents, patients and their families – as well as our dedicated, extraordinary staff – will help mitigate a public health crisis and have a positive impact on many,” Chris Hannon, Chief Operating Officer of Pointe Group Care, said in a statement. “We believe, as a health care provider for our community, that this is the right thing to do in the interest of protecting the health of elders everywhere.”

The patients that will populate the facility will be those that still require a high level of care, including oxygen support, company officials said, adding that conversions like this will reduce the amount of contact between coronavirus patients and at-risk populations.

AdviniaCare at Wilmington will be the second nursing home in the state to undergo such a conversion, following Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Worcester, which HHS Secretary Marylou Sudders designated as the first site earlier this week.

However, a spokeswoman for HHS told the Herald Wednesday that the transition at Beaumont has been paused, adding that the department is working with families to ensure the process is as smooth and safe as possible.

The transformations of the two senior facilities are part of a broader effort from Gov. Charlie Baker to create COVID-19-only care centers across Massachusetts and provide acute care hospitals with additional capacity for incoming patients.

On Tuesday, Baker requested and received approval from the federal government to deploy a 250-bed facility at the DCU Center in Worcester to treat lower acuity coronavirus patients who need monitoring. UMass Memorial Medical Center will lead day-to-day operations of the facility once it’s up on Wednesday with support from state and local partners.

“Here in Massachusetts, we have taken some of the earliest and most aggressive steps in the country to slow this virus,” Baker said. “We must continue to be aggressive in our pursuits.”

Before the conversion at AdviniaCare is made, existing residents and patients will first be tested for COVID-19. Once they receive negative test results, they will be transferred to facilities that “are best suited for their care and are as close as possible,” according to company officials.

“We are taking extreme care to minimize any potential negative effects from the transfer of our long-term care residents and rehabilitation patients. Our number one priority is their health and safety,” John Benedetti, administrator of AdviniaCare at Wilmington, said in a statement. “We are keeping our families fully aware of the situation and working closely with public health officials to ensure the best possible clinical outcomes.”

Company officials said AdviniaCare at Wilmington was chosen by the state because of its location, capacity and infrastructure. Partners HealthCare will also supplement the care team currently in the building.
