Fuzzy huggy types
What’s wrong with the system of justice in the State Of Minnesota? A career criminal who has been convicted on felony charges at least a dozen times is let loose to, it is alleged, steal a car yet again and kill a woman in his dash from police. So many misguided fuzzy huggy types in our fair state pat themselves on the back and wallow in their misdirected “aren’t we good caring people” personas and gleefully preach that we have one of the smallest rates of incarnation in the country. To what end? It’s getting like the wild west out there. If you lock the bad guys up and keep them locked up crime goes down. It is that simple.

First things first
It is becoming increasingly evident that if we do not devote every ounce of our being the United States of America as we know it will come to an end. Therefore I suggest that President Biden’s first effort is to issue an executive order to the effect that the trial of former President Donald Trump be postponed until the virus is defeated and it is clear that the United States of America will continue. Amen.

The unproductive Senate
Take a close look at what Congress accomplished this past year and clearly it is the Senate, not the House of Representatives, that did not focus on “Covid-19, threats foreign and domestic, health care, education, infrastructure” (“Remembered for nothing else” Jan. 17) and other urgent needs of the American people.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell proudly has called himself “the Grim Reaper” because it is his duty to schedule hearings and debate on the Senate floor. Bills sent over from the House languished in a “legislative graveyard,” as shown by McConnell’s statement on Feb. 24, 2020, that 395 bills waiting for Senate action were not going to be passed.
The Senate’s time was spent on its major accomplishment, the filling of court vacancies across the country with conservative judges. It was apparent in the last year of the Obama administration that Sen. McConnell led that mission of the Republican Party when the president’s nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court was denied a hearing in the Senate.
Because the Senate did not even review a great number of bills passed by the House to reach a compromise in 2020, the 116th Congress, just ended, is being called one of the least productive in its history.

Relief for seniors
Prior to 1983, Social Security income benefits were tax-exempt for the majority of senior citizens at the federal level and, prior to 1985, at the state level. Since then, the majority of senior citizens are being taxed on their Social Security income benefits by both the federal and Minnesota governments.
A few years ago, the federal government increased the income thresholds for taxing Social Security benefits for senior citizens. Minnesota government has not yet increased the income thresholds to match the federal thresholds. During our working years, we paid taxes into Social Security, and during our retirement, we’ve been paying taxes on our Social Security benefit. Minnesota senior citizens are being double-taxed, unjustly, on their Social Security.
I do expect Gov. Walz and the 2021 legislative session to prioritize and accomplish matching the federal income thresholds, and I expect they will prioritize working toward tax-exempting Social Security benefits. This ongoing double-taxation on our Social Security benefits income is bullying, severe, malicious, financial elder abuse.
