UnitedHealthcare expands virtual care access - Crain's Cleveland Business

In addition to expanding virtual care availability for members enrolled in employer-sponsored plans, UnitedHealthcare announced plans to introduce a new virtual primary care service designed to offer simpler, more convenient access to care, according to a news release.

The new virtual primary care service — now available for members enrolled in certain employer-sponsored fully insured or self-funded health plans in 11 states including Ohio — is offered in collaboration with a national telehealth provider group and is expected to be expanded to more states this year, according to the release. Part of a broader UnitedHealthcare effort to help enable members to use technology to access care, the service is designed to make it easier for people to establish and maintain relationships with a primary care physician.

In another effort to help improve access to local care providers, UnitedHealthcare has updated a policy, effective Jan. 1, to encourage use of virtual care by continuing to reimburse local primary care physicians, specialists and select therapy providers for certain care administered via telehealth as an alternative to in-person visits.

Both efforts allow eligible members to visit providers virtually for care, including wellness, routine and chronic condition management.

"As more people and care providers move to a digital-first mindset, UnitedHealthcare will continue to modernize our approach to health benefits and invest in new ways to use technology to help make it more convenient for our members to access primary care and other types of medical services," said Dr. Anne Docimo, chief medical officer at UnitedHealthcare, in a provided statement.

The virtual primary care service offers eligible members access to primary care appointments with no or little cost-sharing, according to the release, which notes that during the national public health emergency for COVID-19, member cost-sharing will continue to be waived for COVID-19 testing and testing-related visits.

Through the virtual service, eligible members, according to the release, can access services such as annual wellness visits, appointments for minor ailments, regular follow-ups and checkups for ongoing conditions, specialist referrals, and lab orders and results, as well as writing prescriptions, though restrictions may apply.
