FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio -- When describing the Class of 2021, Fairview High School Principal Christopher J. Vicha said the students were very adaptable finishing school during a pandemic that required remote and hybrid learning.

As far as learning life skills, the principal is confident the 120 members of the Class of 2021 are prepared for whatever the future holds.

“This class has been able to really kind of go with the flow and change along with us really on the fly,” Vicha said. “Coming out of the pandemic, this group of kids is going to have this new skill set to roll with the punches that they’re going to be faced with as they move through life.

“It’s not been a typical high school experience. These kids have also come out of this with a new appreciation for communication and what it takes to be successful in a school environment that will transition into a work environment about communicating consistently and constantly be it with their boss, teacher or whomever. So, adaptable is what I would say these kids are.”

Despite the fact they were handed a difficult year, the principal said the Class of 2021 has expressed gratitude for those events they were able to experience compared to their predecessors.

“Any bit of normalcy that we provided thus far they’ve shown appreciation by telling their teachers ‘Thank you’ or telling me ‘Thank you,’” Vicha said. “We had letters and cards from parents and families.

“I’ve never had a kid thank me in the past for having a prom but that happened multiple times this year. That just really showed the character of the class. They’re extremely caring and understanding.”

Overall, the Class of 2021 -- which included valedictorian Hailey Weaver and salutatorian Isabella Kolodny -- received $76,300 in local scholarships.

Finally, Vicha offered his gratitude to the Class of 2021.

“Thank you,” Vicha said. “Thank you for being understanding of all of the necessary changes in the rollercoaster of the year and the fact, again, I didn’t hear one complaint, one disparaging thing from a class member to another saying that this is terrible or unfair.

“That just speaks to the character of the kids and the class that they really went into this year with the right mindset. I just want to show my appreciation for that.”
