As the parent of a preschooler, I’m writing because our child-care crisis throughout Oregon has reached a state of emergency. We urgently need our legislators to fund child care by passing House Bill 3073. I have experienced our child-care crisis. In 2019, when my son was a year old, I reached out to a day care in my neighborhood. I was told they would have no openings for an entire year, and the cost would be $1,200 a month. I instead relied on a tricky combination of help from family, Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District preschool and drop-in child care (which are fantastic options but need to be expanded to serve more families), babysitters and working late at night.
Since the pandemic began, I have relied only on help from family for child care. I had no access to any paid parental leave options because my employer has more than 500 people and wasn’t covered by the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. While I’m grateful I’ve been able to continue working remotely, my family’s experience has been incredibly challenging. And even with the pandemic hopefully ending, it is still stressful knowing that we’ll still live in a child-care desert with outsized costs for all but the wealthiest families. I hope that Rep. Sheri Schouten, Sen. Kate Lieber and all Oregon legislators will work to swiftly pass HB 3073 during this legislative session so that Oregon families can see a light at the end of the tunnel and be assured that our state will soon support working families.
