Employees across Michigan Medicine continue to make a difference and inspire colleagues through their hard work and dedication. Each month, Headlines features a set of randomly selected submissions from the Making a Difference awards program that highlight our employees’ dedication to an organizational core value.
This month, the core value of focus is caring: I will treat everyone with dignity, kindness and respect, promoting the well-being of self and others.
It is important to recognize the contributions employees make to the organization as it helps the team to become more motivated, drives better teamwork and gives each individual a sense that they are an integral part of achieving organizational goals. You matter, your work matters and you are appreciated.

Candice Barnes-Jones, HITS Business IT customer service
Candice has been one of the most caring and easy-to-work-with people since I’ve started working for HITS. When I reported directly to her, I always knew where I stood within the team and what I could do to improve in my role without feeling belittled. She takes everyone’s ideas or issues seriously and never treats you as if you were less than or that your problems are trivial. She always goes out of her way to ensure everyone is performing to the best of their own abilities.
Marcus Calderon, M.D., internal medicine – hospital medicine
Thank you, Dr. Calderon, for putting together a raw and inspiring DHM Wellness Community Check-In! My heart overflowed and my soul was happy during the session — it was one of those moments in life you have to stop and remember what brings you happiness! Life is about the journey and the people that you meet and learn from along the way. We don’t even know each other well, but you have made a difference to me. The session was the epitome of what I had always envisioned it to be since its conception!
Maria Acuna Salas, instrument processor, operating rooms
Maria, you are so appreciated for taking time out of your day to speak to our Spanish-speaking patient who had been feeling lonely. You showed true compassion and care by showing him someone was here to listen. You always have a smile on your face and it’s a pleasure seeing you on our floor. Thank you!
Karen Kim, M.D., cardiac surgery
On two separate occasions, Dr. Kim came in to save the day when we had serious complications during two procedures. Not only did she show outstanding skill and poise, but she did it with a grace and charm, which alleviated the stress level in the room. It is truly a privilege to work with someone with her skill and camaraderie. People like her embody the ethos of the Michigan difference.
Stephanie Bower, R.N., 10E
Stephanie went above and beyond to facilitate the hook up of a critical patient to EEG, even helping braid her hair. The patient’s condition made the hook up very challenging, and Stephanie’s help made a big difference. Her kindness was much appreciated.
Nicholas Dillman, pharmacy administration
Thank you, Nick, for always being so willing to help with antibiotic questions! You are always approachable and take the time to explain your thought process. You have also been helping the C&W pharmacy a lot by picking up clean room evening shifts. The technicians love working with you and you are always willing to answer questions if they arise on evening shift. Thank you for going above and beyond for our team!
Quoc-Huy Ly-Huynh, KEC Brighton Optical Shop
I brought my prescription sunglasses up to Quoc-Huy in the middle of a busy day without an appointment and he very happily took them and repaired them in between seeing patients. I was able to pick them back up again later that day. He is always so pleasant and helpful!
Ariana Osgood, patient services associate, UH operating rooms
Any shift that has multiple traumas is tough, but when you add in anxious families, the workload can become overwhelming. Ariana, you recently worked one of these shifts and had to manage a busy workflow while also dealing with lots of interruptions from families that were calling frequently. You did a wonderful job of setting healthy boundaries while also providing support and letting them know that you cared. Great work!
George Mitri, respiratory therapy supervisor, Mott
George, you came upstairs to the NEST and translated for the attending physician who was trying to speak to a very scared new father about his baby. I could see how relieved the father became once you told him what was taking place and how his baby was doing. These are the small things that people remember and appreciate.
Samuel Vandiver, Gifts of Art
Sam, you deserve an award for allowing me to share my COVID-19 experience along with others in the newly-created “Staff Story Studio.” You went above and beyond every step of the way (e.g. communication, care, compassion, time, advocating, etc.). Gifts of Art is lucky to have you on their team and I know you will continue to expand your creative abilities, making a TRUE difference within Michigan Medicine.
