A cruise around Fulton will bring cheer to residents of five Fulton nursing homes this weekend.
Planned for Saturday morning, the "Caravan of Caring" will visit Churchill Terrace, Presbyterian Manor, Fulton Nursing and Rehab, Fulton Manor and Valley Park.
Staging begins at 8 a.m. at the parking lot at 10 S. Hospital Drive near Churchill Terrace. The caravan — a socially distanced parade of vehicles — will roll out at 9 a.m.
This event is a sequel to the "Parade of Hope" hosted by the Jefferson City Breakfast Rotary Club in late May, which visited the Churchill Terrace. Co-organizer Nicole Slusser often sang at Churchill Terrace before the pandemic, and her desire to continue putting a smile on the nursing home residents' faces sparked the idea for the parade.
"(Churchill Terrace employees) said they had one resident who doesn't normally leave their room and they attended it," she said Wednesday. "They did say it really helped with uplifting the spirits of the residents and everything."
Nursing homes across America have been closed to visitors since early in the pandemic and remain closed even now. Slusser said people have been reaching out requesting a second event.
"I think, last time with the participants, it definitely lifted our spirits too," Slusser said. "You're helping the residents raise their spirits, and you're raising your own spirits."
During the caravan, participants are encouraged to wave signs, wear cheerful clothes and play upbeat music through their car speakers.
"We'd love for anyone and everyone to come out and join us," Slusser said.
