Child care provider expresses concern for the future - WKOW

NEW GLARUS (WKOW)-- Child care providers are facing a lot of uncertainty amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"A lot of stress because I didn't know how I was going to maintain and trying to figure out how to charge parents but not too much and still pay my bills," Child Care Provider and Educator Corrine Hendrickson said.

Child care centers are suffering across the state. Data from the Wisconsin Policy Forum says as of May, 39% of Wisconsin's 4,500 child care providers self-reported they were closed.

"I am very concerned about my child care colleagues and programs, it's looking terrible," Hendrickson said.

Hendrickson said those concerns extend into the fall because of the lack of state government funding and the unemployment surge.

"We need funding because I can't survive off six children worth of tuition. What happens if I have to close because I am quarantined? How do I reopen? What happens if parents have to quarantine how do they pay me?"

Hendrickson said there will also be challenges when schools reopen under altered schedules.

"The big concern for myself and parents is not wanting to have their children exposed to more people unnecessarily."

Hendrickson said she partnered with the school district to be able to keep the children in her care in the fall and do virtual learning.

"Giving the school district the opportunity to continue keeping those children enrolled, and then myself supporting them and their learning."

Hendrickson emphasizes the biggest thing is keeping in mind what is best for the children.
