Care under COVID-19 can bring caregiver exhaustion | Biz Bits - Chico Enterprise-Record

Lyn Dorenzo of Country House assisted living facility in Chico reminded me that she’s celebrating 35 years in business.

Being under COVID-19 restrictions, she can’t throw a big party or open house to celebrate the Country House’s longevity. But she did take the budget to be used on the celebration and donated it to four local charities supporting seniors, Peg Taylor Center, Passages, Chico Area Recreation and Park District senior programs and Butte Humane Society.

Dorenzo noted that family caregivers may be tiring of caring for their loved ones under these restrictions, but may be fearful about the risk presented by moving them into an assisted living facility.

Media photos and news coverage may produce an unhealthy perspective, she points out, while misnaming the facilities. Hers is an assisted living facility that has no medical care aspect like a skilled nursing facility. Clients need help or overseeing, but not medical care. All of these facilities are held to high public health and licensing standards, she pointed out.

Dan Skaggs, the facility’s executive director, noted that caretaker exhaustion can lead to inadequate care or even abuse.

There are several other assisted living facilities in Chico and Butte County, and several of them offer online tours to see common areas and rooms. With social distancing, relatives can visit or Zoom visits can be arranged at the Country House.

Dorenzo also noted that Passages also provides caregiver counseling for those feeling stressed at 898-5923 to reach the Caregivers Resource Center. Passages is a nonprofit organization that offers resources and services to older adults and family caregivers for little or no cost.

What’s ahead?

Get a look at what’s ahead for the north state, with the Fall Regional Summit planned online for Nov. 4. through the North State Planning and Development Collective at Chico State University.

The event covers the most current economic data from economist Robert Eyler, along with presentations from Rural County Representatives of California, and Ismael Herrera Jr., director of regional stewardship at California Forward.

California Forward hosts the California Economic Summit, a year-round bipartisan effort fueled by business, equity, environmental, and civic leaders from across the state’s diverse regions, according to its website.

Register here for the Zoom meetings or call Alice Patterson at 530-518-3527.

The collective will also be hosting the Annual Economic Forecast Conference on Jan. 14, but the registration information isn’t available yet.

First movies, now music

Meriam Park continues on a roll. First, it was drive-in movies. Now it’s free music inside the historic Meriam Park barn off Springfield Drive in Chico.

Local entertainer and singer Kyle Williams highlighted the concert Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and likely will be back.

In a definite marketing ploy, which isn’t necessarily bad, those who came to listen to the entertainment might think about eating or drinking at the concession cart, which helps the bottom line.

Following the concert is the movie. Guests did have to pay for the movie, reserving tickets online or paying for them there.
