Caring for animals doesn't have to be scary at Halloween - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Halloween may look a little different in 2020 because of COVID-19 protocols discouraging neighborhood trick-or-treating and indoor parties, with the Centers for Disease Control promoting Halloween activities with low risk such as carving pumpkins, decorating your house and modified scavenger hunts.

But to prepare for possible Halloween visitors who may come despite the warnings, the San Diego Humane Society is offering some tips to keep pets safe and healthy during the holiday.

For those keeping candy in the house, because chocolate and other ingredients such as the sweetener xylitol can be toxic to animals, the Humane Society suggests keeping candy in a hard-to-reach spot that pets won’t have access to. The group also suggests being mindful of choking hazards like candy wrappers and foil packaging.

Other suggestions include:

  • Keep animal companions inside and away from those trick-or-treaters who come to the door. To further reduce their stress levels, put pets in an enclosed room with some of their favorite toys and turn on music or the television.
  • Excessive ringing of the doorbell can make some dogs bark and raise their stress levels so consider leaving a note on your door asking trick-or-treaters to lightly knock rather than ring the doorbell.
  • While they may look cute in them, don’t make your pet wear a costume unless you’re sure they enjoy it. A simple Halloween bandana can be a more comfortable alternative to a full costume.
  • Use caution with Halloween decor, keeping jack-o’-lanterns with flames out of the reach of pets — or use flameless candles to prevent curious pets from getting burned. Fake cobwebs and other decorations can be choking hazards as well as inadvertently catch wildlife outside.
  • Make sure your pets are microchipped and wearing tags with a current ID, which will help reunite them should they wander off. Opening the door repeatedly for trick-or-treaters creates plenty of escape opportunities for your pet.
